Claude E. Atwood

Claude Atwood was born in Newberry, South Carolina, a place that shaped the Southern spirit he carried with him wherever life took him. In true trailblazer fashion, he migrated north to Buffalo, New York, where he created lasting memories and met the mother of his children. Claude was a devoted and proud father to Corinthia E. Atwood and Tiffany J. Atwood (now Sampson), a role that filled his heart with love and brought him great happiness.

Claude had a gift for making people laugh. He was a natural entertainer and a master of humor. Those who knew him remember his jokes, his stories, and the warmth he brought into every room. He had an extraordinary ability to make others feel welcome and valued, always showing up for the people he cared about. Loyal, generous, and deeply family-oriented, Claude believed in celebrating life and cherishing the bonds that connected him to others.

A passionate sports fan, Claude could often be found cheering for his favorite teams, sharing the excitement of the game with anyone nearby, or recalling memorable plays with infectious enthusiasm. Whether it was football, basketball, or baseball, he loved the camaraderie, the thrill, and the joy sports brought to everyday life. Claude’s favorite color was blue, a reflection of his calm, steady presence, and it often appeared in the little details he enjoyed from his clothing to his home décor, adding a touch of his personality wherever he went. Traveling was another of his great pleasures, and he approached each new adventure with curiosity, excitement, and the same joy he brought to everything he loved.

Later in life, Claude returned to the South and made his home in Covington, Georgia, where he spent his final years surrounded by love, community, and familiar comforts. By his side was his beloved wife, Linda Atwood, with whom he shared companionship, support, and enduring love. Whether among family, friends, neighbors, or new acquaintances, Claude left an enduring impression of warmth, humor, and genuine connection.

Claude leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish his memory. He is survived by his daughters, Corinthia E. Atwood and Tiffany J. Sampson; his grandchildren, Icyes A. Stewart and Nubrien Joshua Atwood; and his son‑in‑law, Michael Sampson. He is also survived by his siblings, sisters Gladys Oxner and Yvonne Phelps, and his brother, Shabazz Muhammad, and Shabazz's wife, Mary Muhammad; as well as his nieces and their families, including Shannon Miller (Morton), Kizzy Williams, Shunterria Cruz, and Serena Pitts. Claude also leaves behind a multitude of cousins and their families, including but not limited to Charles “Chuck” Atwood and his wife, Patrice Atwood, Lamar Atwood, and Eileen, who shared a connection with him and many cherished moments.
